This is one of the few books on Victorian costume to be illustrated solely by everyday American photographs of the fashions of the era. The collection is organised by decade, from the 1840's through to the 1890's with full notes on each period and each photograph.
These are the results of early photographic techniques such as the daguerreotype and the ambrotype, and demonstrate what everyday Nineteenth century Americans were wearing - clothing, styling, cut, tone - all are revealed here from original sources.
The sitters are individual men and women, as well as poses from couples, and children. Styling varies from the vernacular everyday to the middle class and high fashion of the century.
Illustrations: 288 original photographs.
