This period of U.S history began at Sutter's Mill, California in January 1848, with James Marshall finding several nuggets of gold including one weighing more than a quarter of an ounce. Soon after, prospectors came from in San Francisco, and mining camps and boomtowns sprang up as the gold rush began.
Pictures include prospectors panning for gold, old San Francisco, a miners cabin, authentic clothing of the period, pack trains and waggoners, gold rush steamers and clippers, new arrivals, prospectors at work, operating a rocker by a stream and many more carefully researched and accurately drawn scenes.
