The Great Circus Street Parade in Pictures

From the street parades that would drum up interest in the circus across the USA during the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, there are some surviving rare photographs of the spectacle this created - for famous circuses including Ringling Bros, and Barnum and Bailey. Featuring animals including horses, elephants, camels, ornately carved wagons, performers, clowns, steam calliopes, colourful wheels, crowds and architecture lining the routes - all are shown here in these unusual and historically important photographs. Conveying the sights, sounds and smells of the events, these pictures are mainly black and white, with some mid-century colour images - they give a unique flavour of the spectacle these parades created.
